Raised Porcelain Patio with Sleeper Surrounds in Chelmsford

In short: we have started a new raised patio in Chelmsford, laid in 900 x 600 grey porcelain slabs, with steps leading down to a lower patio and sleeper surrounds framing the new patio area. The project also includes a new concrete shed base, and we return in October to install a new premium turf lawn.
A new garden project under way in Chelmsford: a raised porcelain patio on two levels, with the lawn still to come. Here is what has been built so far and what each part of the design is for.

A Raised Patio with Steps to a Lower Level
A raised patio brings the seating area up to a more usable level, and splitting a garden across two levels turns a change in height into a feature rather than a problem. On this project the raised patio is connected to a lower patio by a set of steps, giving two distinct areas that work together.
Both are being laid in large 900 x 600 porcelain slabs in grey. The large format means fewer joints and a clean, contemporary finish, and porcelain absorbs very little water, so it resists staining, algae and frost and is easy to keep looking good.
Sleeper Surrounds
The new patio area is finished with sleeper surrounds. Sleepers give a raised patio a solid, defined edge and add a natural contrast to the crisp lines of the porcelain, helping the new level sit comfortably within the rest of the garden.
A New Concrete Shed Base
While the groundwork was under way we also laid a new concrete shed base. A shed is only as good as what it stands on: a level, solid base keeps the building square, the doors opening properly and the floor off damp ground. It makes sense to do it as part of a wider landscaping project, when materials and machinery are already on site.
Still to Come: A New Premium Turf Lawn
The final stage is the lawn. We are returning in October to install a new premium turf lawn, which will complete the garden. Autumn is a good time to lay turf — the soil is still warm and there is usually enough rain to help new turf root in.
Thinking About a Raised or Split-Level Patio?
What is a raised patio?
A raised patio is a paved area built up above the surrounding ground level, usually to bring it level with the house or to make better use of a sloping garden.
Why build a patio on two levels?
Where a garden changes height, two levels joined by steps make far better use of the space than a single slope. It also lets you create separate areas — for example, one for dining and one for relaxing.
Does a shed need a concrete base?
A shed needs a firm, level base, and concrete is the most durable option. It prevents the building from settling unevenly and helps keep the floor dry.
When is the best time to lay a new lawn?
Turf can be laid for much of the year, but autumn and spring are ideal, when the ground is warm and moist and the new lawn is under less stress.
